Esperance man “ignored” restraining order

AN Esperance man has been charged with 10 offenses of breaching a family violence restraining order.

Travis Griggs, 32, was previously sentenced with a year-long restraining order from his ex-partner over 2023 and 2024. Griggs was said to have breached this order more than ten times with an “extended period of offending” having exchanged messages with his ex-partner continuously since April 2023.

Griggs’ lawyer argued the mitigating factor for Grigg’s charges was that the relationship between him and his ex during the restraining order breach was mutual and the couple would often see each other in person.

Despite the dynamics of the relationship, Magistrate Lyons could see no way around Grigg’s blatant violation of the law.

“You voluntarily agreed to be bound by law and then ignored it,” The Magistrate said.

“It is not your choice whether to breach or comply with a restraining order.

“Because you have committed so many breaches I am entitled to sentence you to a term of imprisonment.”

Griggs was sentenced to 10 months of intensive supervision, community correction and family violence programs.

He is no longer in communication with his ex-partner and with an extension for the original restraining order, the Magistrate insisted that is the way the relationship should remain.
