Esperance is to have a new asphalt-surfaced shoppers car park.

On Monday work started on the dirt area being used as a carpark, across from the Boulevard Shopping Centre on the corner of Forrest and Windich Streets.

A spokesperson said the works were in preparation for the Shire’s November asphalt program, when the gravel area was to get a hard top and be transformed into formalised off-street parking.

“The refreshed carpark will have structured long vehicle parking, with 11 bays to be marked out and an extra three bays to be set aside for long vehicle parking on Windich Street,” she said.

“Parking for cars is also catered for, with 26 standard bays planned.

“This new carpark will provide mixed formal parking for different vehicle types and needs inland from Esperance’s central business district and close to the shopping centre, supplementing the parking facilities already provided on the other side of the business district at the town boat ramp carpark.”

She said the carpark design had been heavily workshopped with Councillors and complied with Australian standards, and the Shire was “in discussions” with Woolworths and shopping centre owner Charter Hall about improvements to the Boulevard Shopping Centre carpark/entrance.

“This new carpark has been planned to tie into these potential improvements,” she said.

“Direction of travel in the new carpark is one-way for clear traffic flow and safety. “Placement of bays and kerbing takes the turning ability of long vehicles into account, and all trees will remain.”

The unsurfaced block is expected to be closed to parking for around six weeks and long vehicles may use the street parking along Windich Street while works are carried out.
