Next generation judges step up to the plate

Veteran wool classer and over judge Rob Wilson shares his knowledge with ESHS student Jordan Davies.

Agricultural students from Mt Barker Community College and Esperance Senior High School competed in the Young Judges competition on Friday and Saturday.

Mt Barker farm manager Jay Rowles said Esperance was one of the better country shows and they tried to come and participate at least every second year.

“We always feel really welcome when we come to the show, the committee always look after us,” he said.

“We had seven students plus a couple of helpers that were older students.”

Winners of the meat sheep judging competition were Mt Barker’s Johan Theron (blue), George Theron (red), and Brodie Wacura who shared the green ribbon ranking with Esperance’s Demi Riordan.

Mr Rowles said the judging standard was high with often very little margin between the points awarded each judge.

“The overjudges helped them through and gave them pointers at the end too,” he said.

“The idea is for the students to get as close as they can to them if not exactly the same.

“The closer they get the more points they get.”

Mr Rowles said he was particularly pleased with Mt Barker’s performance in the cattle judging, taking out five of the top six positions and six of the top 10.

“A few others surprised themselves in the wool judging — Stella Oxford came away with a second ribbon and she ended up in the cattle judging as well.”

ESHS farm manager Lucy Riordon said Esperance participants won the highest number of points.

“It all went really well,” she said.

“All the students, ribbons or no ribbons, they all did fantastic in my eyes.”

The junior judges, all aged between 14 and 17 years, had to participate in Wool, Ram and Meat Sheep and Cattle judging classes giving the reasons for their decisions.

Esperance Show Head Livestock Steward and coordinator Jake Hamm said the over judges were all happy with how the students worked through the different categories of event.
