A book of bush yarns

Author Robert (Bob) Reed.

“I’ve always been fascinated by the value of humour in times of hardship.”

Esperance resident Robert Reed spoke these words after releasing his new book Yarnin’ — a compilation of short stories he said were all about sharing a little happiness and humour.

Reed said his new release was a complement to a book he published three years ago, a history of Esperance land development.

“I thought I’d like to write another book about the characters,” he said.

“Because of the sort of work I was doing, I was visiting a lot of the farmers and

a lot of them had a yarn to spin.”

Reed has spent two years writing his new book, tackling the challenge with his tools of choice: a led pencil, eraser and a bundle of lined paper.

The selected stories in Yarnin’ were all chosen with humour in mind, and he said they were all happy stories from the past 60 years.

Reed said the book featured all sorts of people who made up Esperance and the short stories were about how the community interacted with changes and happenings around them.

His book is available for purchase at the Dear Village Book Store.
