A 52-year-old man from Castletown has been charged by Esperance detectives after an investigation into a scrub fire in Nulsen on January 13.

A WA Police spokesperson said it would be alleged the man set fire to vegetation on Sims Street.

“The fire burnt approximately 200 square metres of vegetation before it was extinguished,” they said.

“If not for the quick work of volunteer firefighters, the fire could have spread to nearby homes.”

The spokesperson said information received by members of the public was vital for the police investigation.

Detective Sergeant Wayne Davies encouraged people to report suspicious and unsafe behaviour they witnessed in town.

“Especially at this time of year where we are in the summer months and bushfires a can get out of control extremely quickly, people should report any suspicious behaviours they have seen,” he said.

“A lot of bushfires get out of control.”

“With wind changes they get out control and affect the bush lands.”

Sgt Davies said any camera footage, including dashcam footage, was of value to police.

The WA Police spokesperson said the 52-year-old man was charged with lighting a fire likely to cause injury or damage.

They said he would appear in Esperance Magistrates Court on February 4.

“This offence carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment,” they said.
