Australia day in Esperance means the return of the Aus Day Swim Thru.

The Esperance Triathlon club, which organises the annual event, is encouraging people to get moving on Australia Day morning with its annual ocean swim.

Club representative Lisa Critchley said the event would include a 2.5 km ocean swim, beginning from the Whale Tail.

“Registration is at 7am at the Whale Tail and the swim starts at 7.30,” Ms Critchley said.

“From the Whale Tail swimmers will go left out to the groin and out to the jetty and turn around and come back.”

Ms Critchley said registrations were open to participants aged 12 years and above who were strong swimmers.

She said the Esperance Goldfields Surf Life Saving Club and Gary Wilson from the Department of Transport Marine Safety would be monitoring the safety of the swimmers on paddle boards, jet skis and a boat.

Ms Critchley said swimmers would have one hour and fifteen minutes to complete the swim, and the first three males and females across the line would receive a prize from sponsors Esperance Toyota.

Ms Critchley said there were a few rules for those looking to get competitive.

“You can wear a wetsuit, but you will not be eligible for prizes,” she said.

“There are no fins.”

Ms Critchley said participants would receive a swim cap provided by Esperance Honey after they registered on the morning of January 26.
