A car dreams are made of

Alan Lynch said he always dreamed of owning a vintage Holden Torana.

When he found a 1973 Torana LG GTR for sale in Esperance he said he was prepared to spare no expense to return it to its former beauty.

“It was a wreck,” Mr Lynch said.

Purchased from an Esperance local, the car had been sitting in a shed for 20 years before it came into Mr Lynch’s hands.

He said it had been a $100,000 investment for the restoration.

“I sandblasted the whole car, painted it, rebuilt the motor, the gear box, done the interior…it was a great expense,” he said.

The Torana has been treated to a fresh paint job.

“I’d wanted the car since I was a teenager, so I didn’t spare any expense on it.”

Mr Lynch is one of the admin members of the Esperance Coffee and Cars Group who come together on the first Sunday of each month, filling the foreshore carpark with restored cars and motorbikes.

Bright red, with glistening chrome accents, Mr Lynch’s Torana is certainly eye catching.

The vintage black and white upholstery brings that new car feeling to the Torana’s retro charm.

It’s taken him three years to get the restoration to the stage it is at today, but Mr Lynch said he was still not quite finished.

He said the car had only been licenced for about eight months, so he was always looking for the opportunity to take it for a spin.

On Sunday March 16, Outta the Shed Inc, Esperance Veteran and Classic Car Club and Esperance Mechanical Restoration Group will be having a show and shine event, showcasing cars, trucks, muscle cars and motorbikes.

The event will be held at the Esperance Mechanical Restoration Group headquarters on McLean Road. ###ENDS###
