Sixty years saving lives

State Emergency Service and Marine Rescue Esperance celebrated 60 years of community service in Esperance on Saturday.

SES staff member Ian Clarke, SES Esperance deputy manager Michaela Maloney, DFES representative Derek Jones, Deputy shire president Jen Obourne and Goldfields-Esperance Police superintendent Mick Kelly all made speeches before local SES and VMR volunteers received recognition for their years of service.

Mr Kelly said without trained volunteers to help in times of emergency the police would be “stuffed”.

Miss Obourne described their work as a labour of love.

SES and SMR commander Leonie Henderson gave a detailed 60-year history of the two services in Esperance which we will reproduce soon as space permits.

DFES Superintendent Derek Jones and DFES Marine Services manager Mark Eatts then cut the ribbon and unveiled new honour boards made from salvaged Tanker Jetty timber, before all enjoyed an informal supper.
