New mural brings a touch of history to Esperance

Dempster Street has a new mural depicting the old Post Office that stood on the site of the new building until 1969.

It is the work of Perth artist Jerome Davenport and building owner Doug Slater commissioned him to paint it.

“It was his idea to celebrate the history of the old Post building,” Davenport said.

“There was a little bit of research involved, we got some information from the museum and the historical society which formulated the basis of the design.

“Trying to find those original photos was a bit of a challenged but we found a few and stitched them together to create the scene that you see here today.”

Davenport said he had spent most of last week on the work and travelled “far and wide, interstate and overseas” as he had a steady stream of work, like several other full-time muralists in WA.

As we spoke to him on Friday he was about to depart for another job at Darkan, and had others lined up at Boddington, Fitzroy Crossing and Japan.
