Terrific Tigers give Ports the blues

Reigning premiers Gibson remain undefeated in the 2025 EDFA Women’s competition, powering its way to a third-straight victory at Ports Oval on Saturday.

The match between the two sides who contested last year’s grand final was played in perfect conditions and it was the Tigers who capitalised striding to a 5.6 (36) to 1.1 (7) victory over the Blues.

Tiff O’Brien scored the opening goal of the match for the Blues, the first blemish against the Gibson defence for the season, as they had kept the Lions and Bulldogs scoreless at their last two outings.

From there the Tigers controlled possession of the football, willing to move the ball on at every opportunity with seemingly more numbers around the football as Ports played a more defensive style relying on multiple stoppages.

Midfielder Annie-May Jannings was impressive for the Tigers in getting the ball forward to dangerous areas as Mikalya Barty (one goal) posed an effective link player for Gibson between its defence and attack.

Rani Smart (two goals), Chelsea Exell and Alysha Castelli rounded out Gibson’s better players as O’Brien, Christina Macdonald and Tahlia Maloney battled hard for Ports.

Meanwhile, the Esperance District Football Association will recognise the Belt Up road safety message for all of the round four senior men’s and women’s football matches to be played tomorrow.

The round marks the 27th year of the partnership between Country Football WA and the Insurance Commission of WA to promote the Belt Up road safety message.

To remember those injured or killed on the road, players will hold a minute’s silence before the start of their senior games.

All league footballs will carry the Belt up logo for this round, with the best player on the ground for the matches to receive the football and a specially designed guernsey to promote the Belt Up message.
