Talented GIFSA participants have been finetuning their art skills at weekly classes and now Esperance can engage with their creations at the newest Cannery exhibition, “Unframed”.

The display boasts works collated over the past few months and showcases the imagination and personal stories of artists living with disability in the region.

GIFSA community facilitator Joe Franzone said it was an opportunity for the artists to provide an insight into their world.

“We haven’t really got a theme or anything as such — it’s kind of just been pieces of art that they’ve whipped up and some of the pieces are shockingly good,” Mr Franzone said.

“I think one of them, there was a main character in the middle and then a heap of people around him that all looked a bit different and interesting and that was their perception of the world so that was really interesting to see.”

It also includes neurodiverse-friendly, hands-on instillations, including a knitting station, Lego corner, a writing nook and a chill-out ambient space.

Mr Franzone said the participants were “really excited” to share their talents with the community.

He said he hoped viewers would be able to appreciate what people with disability in the community had to offer.

“They’re super excited about the art stuff but also we’ve got the opening night and one of the guys wants to come and showcase some of his music,” he said.

“I think he’s written some original music and he’s going to play it through the speakers and do some DJing or something.

Unframed officially commences with opening night celebrations at the Cannery on July 25, from 5-7pm.

Esperance can attend the free exhibition until August 23.
