Story book characters commandeered Esperance Primary School last week as students and teachers dressed up for Book Week.

Willy Wonka, Cat in the Hat, and Little Red Riding Hood were among the elaborate costumes the children rocked on August 8 for the Book Week Parade.

The staff also joined in on the fun, sporting red and white striped Where’s Wally costumes and accessories.

Esperance Primary School deputy principal Fabianne Lance said the school was “amazed and delighted” by the efforts and said the week created a “buzz” around reading.

“It’s a celebration of one of the most important life skills a child can develop: the ability to read,” Ms Lance said.

“The creativity and attention to detail in the students’ outfits were truly remarkable, with characters from every corner of literature brought to life.

“The parade was a joyful showcase of individuality as each child’s choice reflected their personal connection to a story or character.”

Ms Lance said Esperance Primary School saw reading as a “transformative process where students progress from learning to read to reading to learn”.

She said one of the highlights was the book fair run by the school’s librarian, Sarah Pope.

She said the week’s events were made more special by the support of parents and carers and the team of volunteers.
