Councillor Jennifer Obourne has been re-elected as the Esperance Shire deputy president.

Cr Leonie de Haas and Cr Gemma Johnston also threw their names in the hat for the position.

Addressing the council, Cr Obourne said in the past two years as deputy president she had “proven leadership and reliability”, “acted with integrity and purpose” and “enabled a collaborative approach and strong community”.

“I’ve led without fear of failure,” she said.

Cr de Haas said she had brought transparency and genuine service during her four years on council.

“It’s not just about stepping up but standing beside,” Cr de Haas said.

“I believe in this place we call home.”

Cr Johnston focussed on independence, accountability and leadership “when it counts”.

She said there was dysfunction in the council which had led to workplace bullying.

“Unfortunately, scrutiny met with hostility and lack of strong leadership encouraged lodging of complaints,” she said.

“Our community is tired of division.”

“I’d like to remind you all that strong councils are built on respect and not fear.”

Council members, including Shire president Ron Chambers, cast their votes at a Special Council Meeting on Tuesday.

Cr Obourne secured six votes, while Cr De Haas received two and Cr Johnston, one.
