Esperance Senior High School (ESHS) is set to have a new student services area next year.
A Department of Education spokesperson said the west-wing of the existing library would be refurbished to create a “hub” with a reception area, conference room, interview room, nurse’s office, and space for student support services and a breakout area.
They said the plans were developed in consultation with ESHS and would be released for tender soon.
“Following evaluation of tender submissions and award of a construction contract, it is anticipated work will start early 2026,” the spokesperson said.

“The facilities will support student wellbeing and enable specialist services and programs to be delivered on site.
“The project is anticipated to be completed in 2026.”

Education Minister Sabine Winton said the WA and Federal Governments were delivering $3 million for construction of the new student services hub.
The project will provide much needed upgrades to ESHS, which recently topped the list for building defects at WA schools.
The Education Department’s “building conditions” report found ESHS had 121 maintenance problems, as reported by Weekender (October 17).
Minister Winton said building issues at the school had improved since 2017, when Labor came to power.

“The number of defects at Esperance Senior High School have decreased by 53 per cent under this WA Labor Government compared to what was inherited from the previous Liberal-National Government,” Ms Winton said.
Minister Winton said plans for further ESHS upgrades were progressing too, with $650,000 granted towards a project plan last year.
It is the second time a maintenance redevelopment plan for ESHS has been undertaken in the past 25 years.
Since then, the government has injected some funding into the school for STEM classroom upgrades and solar panels.
The Shire of Esperance and community members continue to advocate for a large-scale redevelopment of the 60-year-old school.
