Esperance identity and adventurer Tom Smitheringale gave a talk at Fenwick Cinemas on Saturday as part of the second annual Grounded Hiking Festival.

He is best known for his solo unsupported expedition to the North Pole in 2010, a feat only ever completed by two people.

Days out from completing the 800km trek he had a near-fatal fall through the ice and had to be rescued by the Canadian military.

He went on to several other adventures in the Middle East before returning to Australia, and often treks the Stirling Range ridge walk.

The presentation was one of may events on the calendar for the five day festival which finished on Monday.

The highlights were the numerous walks of various lengths and degrees of ability which brought numerous visitors to Esperance.
