The odds were against the anglers who took part in the 32nd annual Esperance Archipelago Offshore Angling Classic on Sunday last week

Leaving the calm waters of the Bandy Creek harbour, the competitors headed out bright and early into viscous winds and tumultuous waves.

Richard Warner was one of the angling classic winners, reeling in a 21.05kg samson fish around mid-morning.

He said the conditions on Sunday were less than ideal for a day a day on the water.

“With those weather conditions…I wouldn’t normally go fishing,” he said.

“It’s hard to travel wide when it’s so windy.

“Going out and coming back in the swell was at least two meters.”

Mr Warner said their tactic on the day had been to find some protection behind an island where they could put in four rods.

That was where Mr Warner said he hooked his winning samson fish.

“My rod bent over and started screaming,” he said.

“We chased the fish around until it was alongside the boat.”
