A shark sighting was reported at Wharton Beach early Monday afternoon.
A surf board with evidence of bite marks was pulled from the water of Wharton Beach while authorities search for missing surfer.
A police spokesperson said a possible surfer in distress was reported at 12:10pm on Monday afternoon.
She said beachgoers had cleared the water after sighting a shark and a surfboard was spotted floating in the ocean.
“It is believed the surfer was the victim of a serious shark bite incident.,” she said.
“Police, Marine Rescue WA, and SES personnel are currently searching for a missing surfer off the coast of Wharton Beach.”
A spokesperson from The Shire of Esperance said Wharton Beach was closed as of 2:20pm on Monday march 10.

“The closure will be effective from now for 24hrs and will be reviewed tomorrow (11 March 2025) afternoon,” they said.
DPIRD has issued an alert via the Shark Smart website advising people to take caution in the area and adhere to beach closures.
