After being in Esperance for six months, a traveller decided a grand gesture of generosity was a way he could “share the blessing” with the Esperance community.
Nicholas Hoo is a backpacker who travelled to Australia from Malaysia.
Six months ago, he arrived in Perth without any solid plans but plenty of resumes he sent all over Australia. Mr Hoo said his first few days had been very stressful.
“I had a lot of anxiety because housing is hard to get, I didn’t know where I would end up or what kind of job I would get,” he said.
“Within four days I got an offer from Ampol and that’s how I ended up here.”
Mr Hoo had been working at Ampol since he arrived and had recently also started work at McDonald’s.
“I think I’m quite lucky, in the end everything turned out rather smooth,” he said.
“If it wasn’t for Esperance I wouldn’t have savings.”
As a gesture of his gratitude, last week Mr Hoo put together 10 goody bags each with a variety of food essentials and left them at the town bus station for anyone to collect.
“I want to share the blessing to people in need,” he said
“When we receive help when we need it, the feeling is great. You can always choose to be kind to people, I believe in that.”
When Mr Hoo posted on Facebook to let people know about the goody bags, he said he had no idea it would garner such a positive response and receive more than 1000 likes.
“I think one of the reasons it had an overwhelming reaction was because it was positive,” he said.
“People like positivity.”
