Cezary Carmichael and Leo Norman are cycling around Australia on their gap year. They stopped at Esperance overnight on Sunday.
Two school leavers from Victoria win this year’s prize for the most original way to spend a gap year.
Badging themselves as Two Birders, Two Bikes, One School they have been cycling around Australia, observing and recording as many bird species as they can, and fundraising to build a new school.
Cezary Carmichael, 19, and Leo Norman, 18, aim to raise $100,000 for a vital school building project in Timor-Leste and to break a birdwatching record.
“We have cycled nearly 10,000km from Melbourne to Esperance and raised over $84,000 for the registered Australian charity Spend It Well to build a school for over 130 children 4km from Balibo,” Mr Charmichael said.
“We have also recorded over 620 unique Australian bird species so far.”
