Esperance Shire chief executive Shane Burge has passed his annual performance review, with Council saying he had “exceeded performance requirements”.
Shire president Ron Chambers commended on the results of the period review by Council.
“Shane has done an exceptional job this year,” he said.
“We’re in an area that doesn’t get a lot of love from State and Federal Government, and even from the departments there’s a lot of hard work that goes into it.

“He probably hasn’t achieved all of the KPIs (key performance indicators), but those that he’s achieved he’s achieved really well and exceeded.
“And to do that with the headwinds that we’ve already got is what tipped him over from from ‘achieving’ to ‘exceeding’.”
We asked President Chambers to explain the “KPIs”.
“The first part of his KPIs are always legislative, the roles that he is supposed to perform as a CEO,” he said.

“The next lot of KPIs come out of projects that are in the council plan.
“They’re to make sure that we pick those projects that are in the council plan that we really want to move on, or anything that we feel has lagged a little bit.
“We can flag that as a KPI to make sure that he gets to that job, which makes sure those projects are moved forward.”
Major projects announced this year were relocation of the rubbish transfer station to Myrup and the James Street Cultural Precinct.
Council came from behind closed doors to announce the result of the review on Tuesday, at the same time awarding Mr Burge an increase of 3.5 per cent on his base salary.
