A Nulsen man was given a nine-month suspended prison sentence after he assaulted and threatened to kill his former partner while intoxicated at their home in July last year.
James Winmar, 50, held two kitchen knives up to his ex-partner’s throat and threw a glass of wine on her after she made comments about the food he was cooking at the time.
The prosecuting officer said Winmar’s sentencing should “send a message to the community that violence against women is never acceptable”.
It is the second time Winmar has faced sentencing in the last year.
In May 2024 he was given a community-based order and received a $600 fine for punching a firefighter and spitting at another.
Winmar’s defence said he acknowledged he needs help for his anger and jealousy issues and has engaged in counselling and secured employment since.
Magistrate Lyons labelled Winmar’s actions as “abhorrent”, “demeaning” and a “betrayal of trust”.
He said with appropriate management he is at a lower risk of committing another family violence offence.
Magistrate Lyons considered Winmar’s remorse but said he pleaded guilty at a “very late stage”.
Winmar was given a 12-month suspension order on the condition no further convictions are brought against his name.
