Double demerits now

Double demerits start Friday December 20.

With the expected rise in road rules complacency during the holiday season, Esperance police are reminding people to put their safety above all else.

“Don’t drink and drive,” they said.

“Don’t drive tired.”

A police spokesperson said even while holiday goers were relaxing, the police would be vigilant in monitoring all the happenings in Esperance.

“We’ve pretty much got an idea of what happens, and you try and get more presence out when you can,” he said.

Double demerits will be in place from December 20 until January 5.

According to the WA Government website, double demerits apply to:

  • Speeding
  • Drink or drug driving
  • Not wearing a seatbelt or child restraint
  • Running a red light
  • Illegal use of a mobile phone while driving
  • Driving a motor vehicle fitted with a device designed to evade speed camera detection
  • Driving a motor vehicle in a manner to evade detection by a speed camera.
