Driving out of history

Ewin Stewart arrived in style to the Esperance Museum Village for this week’s History Half Hour run by the Esperance Historical Society.

His Chamberlain ‘Champion’ tractor was an antique spectacle and set the wheels in motion for Mr Stewart’s presentation on Esperance Land development in the early 60s.

The tractor was part of a convoy that drove from Victoria’s Apsley to Esperance to aid in seed spreading, a significant stage in Esperance’s agricultural history.

Forty years later, in the year 2000, Mr Stewart along with 30 members of the Chamberlain 9G Tractor Club drove his tractor from Parliament House in Perth to Byron Bay in NSW as part of a tractor trek to raise money for the RFDS and local schools.

Ewin Stewart invited his audience on a trip down memory lane as he recalled anecdotes and showed pictures of the collective memory the old tractor conjured for long-time Esperance locals.
