Esperance has been identified as part of a high-risk fire region in the seasonal bushfire outlook for summer 2024 released by the National Council for Fire and Emergency Services.
National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) deputy coordinator general Joe Buffone said NEMA and the national government had been working with all states and territories to prepare for the high-risk weather season.
“As a nation we are more prepared than ever,” he said.
“The Australian Government and NEMA have been leading national coordination initiatives, briefing over 2500 agency and industry leads.”
Mr Buffone said the release of the summer fire outlook was especially important to remind residents in high-risk regions to stay informed and plan ahead.
Federal Emergency Management minister Jenny McAllister said there were lots of things families could do to be prepared and now was a good time to start.
“Take the time to prepare your homes for the types of hazards you could face, and ensure you’re ready to act, should a disaster strike,” she said.
“Writing a family emergency plan or cleaning up around your home is something that’s equally valuable for fire, storm or cyclone.”
A WA Government spokesperson said it took only about 15 minutes to prepare a home bushfire plan, with advice available at mybushfireplan.wa.gov.au .
