Marine rescue Esperance has been celebrated at the Western Australia Fire and Emergency (WAFES) Services Awards for an outstanding rescue of five people from a shark-damaged boat.
A DFES spokesperson said WAFES awards take place each year to recognise excellence of the volunteers and staff who dedicate their time for the benefit of their community.
This year, the Marine Rescue Team Achievement Award was won by the Esperance volunteers for the hours they spent battling strong winds in the complete dark to reach the stranded boaters.

“It’s great recognition for the work and effort that our team has put in,” Marine Rescue Commander Jamie Saunders said.
“To be able to acknowledge and celebrate that is a fantastic experience and a great honour.”
Commander Saunders said that though they are grateful to win such an award, the Marine Rescue team would “give it all up to save one more person.”
Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm AFSM commended all awardees, volunteers and staff apart of WAFES on their heroic efforts and achievements in the past year.
“So many of our staff and volunteers have a remarkable willingness to help when times are tough and deserve every award and plaudit that comes their way.”
