Esperance man stabbed after altercation

A 63-year-old man was stabbed in Esperance over the weekend in what police say appears to be an “unprovoked attack”.

Esperance Detective Sergeant Wayne Davies said a 25-year-old man allegedly stabbed the victim once on the left side of his chest area following an altercation at a “work location” in Castletown on Saturday morning.

He said the victim was taken to Esperance Hospital with life-threatening injuries and later transferred to Royal Perth Hospital where he remained in a stable condition.

“He’s doing quite well and has been assisting the detectives in Perth regarding Esperance Detectives’ enquiries,” Sgt Davies said.

Police arrested the accused Joe Wiremu Andrew Tamanui-Semmens at the scene and charged him with grievous bodily harm.

Mr Tamanui-Semmens was remanded in custody at the Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison and was next scheduled to appear in Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court on May 23 at 9.30am for a bail application.
