Wildlife rescuer and snake removalist Darren Darch led a session of “wildlife fun for kids” at the Esperance Scout Hall on Monday.
“It was fantastic — we had a really good turnout with about 30 kids and 15 adults,” he said.
“We talked about snake safety and interaction with snakes around them, and why we should leave resident snakes on the property to prevent uneducated snakes from coming in.”
Resident snakes? Uneducated snakes? We asked Mr Darch to explain.
He said many farm houses and sheds had a snake in residence.

“If you have got a snake and he is a resident, it knows your habits, your dogs, the cars, it will more often than not disappear when you walk down stairs or on the path,” he said.
“He is the good snake to have around and he is less likely to interact with you.”
Mr Darch said removing that snake could encourage a “new snake” to enter the property.
“When he goes, a new snake who doesn’t know your habits it more likely to just bite when you come down the stairs,” he said.
“He doesn’t know the habits and patterns and vibrations of the people who live there.

“The resident snake would never do that — he is the good snake to have around to control your rodents.”
Mr Darch offers advice and a household snake removal service to the public.
