Fairytale fun at Shrek the Musical

Scott Suttar and Derek Clarke starred as Shrek and Donkey.

The opening night of the Esperance Theatre Guild’s production of Shrek the Musical met with resounding applause from the Bijou Theatre audience and it was not difficult to see why.

Before the stage curtains even parted, Shrek and Donkey’s brief introduction, voiced with perfect character accents by Scott Suttar and Derek Clarke, was a promise of their performances to come.

Played by Mak Bailye, Lord Farquaad taunts the gingerbread man played by Morgan Knox.

As soon as the curtains parted, fans of the 2001 DreamWorks movie found themselves in the mythical land of Far Far Away thanks to the Guild’s attention to detail in set design, costumes and lighting.

As we followed the characters through the trials and tribulations faced by those belonging to storybooks, younger cast members’ conviction and talent was especially impressive.

As a first timer to the Bijou Theatre I could not help but compare the show to others I had seen in cities.

The standard of the production totally exceeded my expectations.

Donkey, Fiona, Shrek and the Dragon. Played by Derek Clarke, Scott Suttar, Lynne Norwood and Ripley Hepburn.

The Esperance Theatre Guild’s captivating performance was a testament to the dedication of the ensemble and hard work of the crew, director Keah Truncali, producer Marcella Sharry, musical director Cait Edwards and stage manager Tanya Charsley.
