Government shifts gears on mandatory signage

Following a meeting in October with the Heavy Vehicle Road Signage Group, Main Roads WA have announced new Registered Access Vehicle warning signs will be optional.

A spokesperson from Main Roads WA said the new signs were not mandatory to RAV users but may help to make roads safer.

“The new RAV warning signs are optional but offer several benefits, including providing more information to other road users, helping them decide if it is safe to overtake the road train or long vehicle,” they said.

“The signs also educate drivers about the length of road trains using clear images and car graphics for comparison.”

The Heavy Vehicle Road Signage Group was formed earlier this year because of the critical response the WA Government received after its announcement that new pictorial warning signs would be mandated.

With input from industries such as Western Roads Federation, WA Livestock and Rural Transport Association, the Transport Workers Union (TWU), and various transport companies dealing with general freight, dangerous goods and fuel, the group collectively decided the new signs would not be mandatory.

The group also determined that operators of vehicles longer than 22 meters will have the choice to keep the current warning signs or display the new warning sign that indicates the length of the vehicle.

“This flexibility allows operators to choose the best signage for their specific vehicle length and configuration,” the Main Roads spokesperson said.
