“Hoods” in Esperance

Hoods will be performed at the Esperance Civic Centre in June.

An adolescent-friendly production is coming to Esperance in June and organisers say engagement with the arts scene could prove beneficial for students’ mental health.

The Barking Gecko Arts production “Hoods” will be performed at the Civic Centre on June 25.

The play written by Angela Betzien explores the themes of poverty and family solidarity in suburban areas and is recommended for students in years 9 -12.

It is part of a two-year initiative, delivered on behalf of the WA State Government, to showcase theatre and bring creative programs to children in regional towns.

Barking Gecko Arts CEO Ryan Taaffe said interaction with the arts could support the well-being and resilience of teenagers in more isolated communities.

“When children experience live theatre, it fosters creativity and empathy, improves emotional intelligence and brings bucketloads of joy,” Mr Taaffe said.

The arts company expects the production tour will reach over 2,000 children and their families and said it will provide economic benefits for the arts sector too.

Barking Gecko Arts partnered with Horizon Power to create the $100,000 project.
