The South East Coastal Bowling League hosted the annual Southern Bowling Zone Inter-League Round Robin Ladies 4s championship for three days of intense competition last weekend.

The event drew 96 bowlers from the 39 Bowling Clubs of the six Leagues based in the Southern part of WA, stretching from Denmark up to Brookton and all points East, playing at the Esperance Bowling Club.

The hosts treated spectators to an exhibition of great bowling skill for the entire weekend as they were triumphant by half a rink from the Great Southern, the League’s first win at the event since 2018.

Coral Grant’s rink of Margaret Rance, Margot Hawkins and Tania Andrews were particularly impressive winning four matches out of five for the weekend, leading the League to victory.

The SECBL triumph was set up on the Friday afternoon as the team won all four rinks against Great Southern with a massive aggregate win of 109-57.

The SECBL also had the measure of main rivals Lower Great Southern in the last match on Sunday 93-69, which were chasing its fourth title in a row, after splitting the rink wins at two apiece.

All players were assessed for selection for the 20-player Southern Bowling Zone team which will compete at the Inter-Zone Round Robin 4s, at the Kalgoorlie Bowling Club early next month.

Five players from the SECBL were selected in the Zone team: Grant, Andrews and Rance were joined by Condingup pair Helen Perks and Rachel Young.

Showing that bowls isn’t exclusively a sport for old people, Ongerup’s April Langdon (11) made her debut at the ILRR 4’s playing for Central Stirling.

Organisers of the three day competition acknowledged Nutrien Ag Solutions, Southern Ports Esperance and Raine & Horne Great Southern for their sponsorship of the event.
