Newtown-Condingup’s League side honoured the team behind Newtown’s famous premiership victory thirty years ago with a comfortable 31-point win against a youthful Ports on Saturday.
The Demon’s last-ever premiership side, which defeated Gibson by a point 12.9 (80) to 12.8 (79) in 1995, would have been impressed by the current Lions performance in recording its first victory for the 2025 season.

The Lions kicked five unanswered goals during the second and third terms after Ryan Thomas had sent the Blues in front by three points with the opening major of the second quarter.
Brayden Barker, in his first match back from a knee injury suffered in the 2023 elimination final, was joined by Brett Trocinski and Tyson Francis as multiple goalkickers for the Lions.
Cameron Somerville dominated in the ruck for the Lions, giving first use of the football to Regan Morris, Ben Leopold and Tasmanian recruit Thomas McShane.

Sporting one of the youngest sides (by average age) that has been seen in the League, the Blues were best served by Zac Major, Tyson Gibson and veteran Nigel Johnston (two goals).
Meanwhile, in the other match of the round, Gibson made a fast start at Esperance Oval on Saturday kicking five first quarter goals to nil.
The Tigers withstood a fight back from the Bulldogs going on to win by 14 points, Ruben Wakeham impressing with five goals for Gibson.
