Perfect winter conditions greeted the Esperance Soccer Association’s junior players for the Stephen Bell Knockout Cups played last Wednesday August 13.

The warm northerly breeze died down for the start of the first final, between City and Redbacks Under 14s teams, making conditions pleasant for players and spectators alike.

Nathan Cassam made the early breakthrough for City with a goal after a solo run into the box, right before half time Callum Molloy scored from the penalty spot for Redbacks, smashing the ball into the top right hand corner of the net.

Cassam fired in a rocket from the penalty spot to give City the win just before full time, as Redbacks desperately tried to find an equaliser in the final minutes.

The match was fairly refereed by Stephen Bell, and the Cups have been struck in his honour for all of the work done for the Association from the early days and in recognition of the countless number of committee roles taken up over the years.

The midpoint break of the evening gave the assembled crowd the opportunity to acquire  delicious burgers and pumpkin soup from the canteen, which did a roaring trade throughout the night.

It was a cagey start to the Under 17s final from Atletico and Glory as both teams took their time to settle into a rhythm, both defences looking solid and well organised.

Kearata Ramalepa broke the deadlock midway through the first half, after Atletico had several chances spurned by Glory’s goal keeper Hay, who showed great athleticism to keep the shots on goal out.

Ramalepa continued his impressive season to date with a further two goals, including one from the penalty spot, in the second half to bring up his cup final hat trick.
