Councillor elect Max Szulc has resigned from Ravensthorpe Shire Council.
He did not appear at his first meeting, but instead sent a resignation letter to be read out, behind closed doors, at the agenda briefing before Tuesday’s meeting.
His departure leaves a casual vacancy which could usually be occupied by the new backfill provisions in the WA Local Government Act which allows the next successful candidate to occupy the seat of a councillor who leaves the council.

However on this occasion there had only been three candidates for the three vacant positions on Council, so the vacancy can only be filled at a by-election.
Shire chief executive Matt Bird said this would likely be in the new year.
“Subject to the Department of Local Government giving us a more firmer date, at this stage the indication was maybe March 2026,” he said.
The following is an email from Max Szulc to Ravensthorpe Shire CEO Matthew Bird outlining his reasons for resignation.
