Member for Roe Peter Rundle said he would use a parliamentary device in a bid to stop the new South Coast Marine Park.
This is known as a “disallowance motion”.
“I have already spoken to the clerks of the Legislative Assembly and I will be moving a disallowance motion on the South Coast Marine Park on the first week back in parliament,” he said.
“The scenario behind it is lack of consultation with the public of Esperance, Hopetoun, Bremer Bay and so forth.”
Parliament is expected to resume in May, when tomorrow’s election results are known.
The WA Government proclaimed the South Coast Marine Park last November.
A spokesman for WA Environment minister Reece Whitby said no legislation was needed to implement the park.
“While the plans need to be tabled in Parliament (and are disallowable, even though they won’t go to a vote unless a majority of members in either chamber move to disallow them) the CALM Act already provides the Minister with the authority to create a marine park,” he said.
