After extensive fire damage Helms Arboretum and Kepwari Walk Trail in Woody Lake Nature Reserve remain closed.

A Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions spokesperson said they had been working to repair the damage caused by these serious bushfires last November and January.

“Further work is required before these sites can safely re-open,” she said.

“Remaining rehabilitation work that will allow Kepwari walk trail to be opened will be undertaken as soon as weather allows, and it is anticipated the trail will open in spring 2025.

“Helms Arboretum will remain closed until dead and dangerous trees can be removed and repairs made to damaged infrastructure.”

The spokesperson said it was “hoped” Helms Arboretum could be partially opened by the end of 2025.

It was known for its collection of more than 120 native trees started by forester Andy Helms in 1928.
