Not mice, possums!

A tiny baby pygmy possum is in and out a humidicrib at wildlife carer Jenelle Forde’s home in Nulsen.

“I got a message from a girl that works at Bread Local on Friday afternoon,” she said.

“It is at that delicate stage of survival – it was found on the lawn and really cold.

“It has just left mum and hasn’t found its way.”

Ms Forde said she would keep the tiny marsupial in care for a couple of weeks, feeding it nectar.

“With a lot of pygmy possums, with cold weather it is a touch-and-go survival rate, even in the wild, with not much body fat on them.”

Ms Forde said young pygmy possums were often mistaken for mice and “stomped on”.

However they are easily identified by their very curly tails.

Esperance Shire funded the humidicrib, “auspiced” by Esperance Lions Club.

Ms Forde and her partner Darren Darch run Fauna for the Future.
