Esperance police are reminding people to lock their cars after receiving many calls over after items were stolen from unlocked vehicles.
Officer in charge Senior Sgt Chris Taylor said it was something that happened every year, but recently the frequency of incidents seemed to have increased.
“It seems people think, ‘that would never happen to me’,” Snr Sgt Taylor said.
“Unfortunately, there’s not-so-nice people that take opportunities.”
Snr Sgt Taylor said people had reported stolen items like handbags, clothing and fishing rods.
He said only last week there was Engel fridge taken from the back of a Ute.
The thefts were common in caravan parks where Snr Sgt Taylor said it was difficult to track down perpetrators.
“We can look for CCTV and other witnesses but generally it’s difficult to solve because they are in and out quickly,” he said.
“There’s lot of people coming in from other areas.”
He said his number one piece of advice to reduce the risk of being robbed was to lock the car.
“We haven’t had any thefts involving broken windows,” he said.
“It’s always unlocked vehicles or a ute.
“Take the time to lock your car.
“Make those thefts impossible.”
