Solar power scams have Horizon Power customers on edge

Esperance residents have taken to Facebook to report suspicious doorknockers claiming to be Horizon Power Representatives.

Horizon Power have said they are urging people to beware and to take precautions to avoid being scammed by the false claims of these door-to-door solar salesmen.

“We remind customers that Horizon Power does not conduct door-to-door sales or cold calls” Horizon Power’s Customer and Community Manager, Lauree Arnold said.

“We have formal methods of communicating with customers, that clearly identify our employees as Horizon Power personnel.”

Police Advice

While the misleading information being spread by the doorknockers has not at this stage left anyone out of pocket, Esperance police are aware of the issue and the possibility of fraud if people are not careful.

“If it seems too good to be true, then it just may be,” Snr Sgt Chris Taylor said.

“Follow up with who they say they are from and take heed of warnings.”

Recommended Precautions

The Police have directed people to the information that has been provided by Horizon Power that encourages customers to take precautions when dealing with solar power transactions.

These include:

  • Using Horizon Power’s online solar savings calculator on My Account to verify any figures they are provided by solar providers, and to get multiple quotes before committing to a purchase
  • After sales support and maintenance is also a key consideration – Horizon Power recommends using a local installer who can physically attend to any maintenance items that may arise with a customer’s system
  • If someone door knocks or calls claiming to be selling something on behalf of Horizon Power, customers should reach out to their local Horizon Power office so staff can verify this
  • Customers can check that their chosen installer is accredited to install Smart Connect Solar by visiting the Solar Accreditation Australia website.

Further to this, the company recommends using an accredited local seller and installer when buying solar so customers can stay thoroughly informed in the whole process.
