A case of suspected bird poisoning poses a risk to children and pets, an Esperance Shire spokesperson said.
Shire staff picked up some grain and dead pigeons from the Taylor Street Jetty area last week.
“We think the birds may have been poisoned,” an officer posted on social media.

“We’ve sent the grain off for testing and are working with stakeholders to make sure the area is safe.
“We want to remind everyone not to try handling pest control themselves.
“It can be dangerous for people and animals.”

She urged beach goers not to let their kids or pets touch any dead birds.

“Keep your dog on a lead and stay away from any grain you see,” she said.
On Tuesday a shire spokesperson said test results for the grain had not yet arrived, and it was not known if the birds had indeed been poisoned.
“With no supporting evidence to hand, the Shire of Esperance has not reported this matter to Police,” she wrote.
“It is appropriate at this stage to report the matter to DPIRD’s Emergency Animal Disease Hotline, and this has been done.”
