A young Esperance man has been convicted of eleven counts of stealing between May and June this year.
Jayden Peabody had previously pleaded guilty to incidents acting Sergeant Amy Southall described as breaking into a number of parked cars and stealing mobile phones, bank cards and tools, as well as removing 4×4 equipment from the outside of the vehicles.
On July 2, Police searched Mr Peabody’s residence where they recovered some of the stolen goods, though there were two incidences where stolen goods amounting to $5000 and $2000 were not recovered.
Peabody’s charges included a $1500 fine and two potential compensation notes for the stolen property that was not recovered.
He will be required to serve a ten-month community order and attend programs such as psychological counselling which his lawyer said Peabody was “open to in order to improve his consequential thinking”.
Peabody’s lawyer described him as “lacking in victim empathy” but said he recognised he was in need of guidance in order to stop doing what Peabody referred to as “these stupid things”.
Magistrate Lyons explained that due to new laws, repeat theft offenders would now be liable for a prison sentence.
He urged Mr Peabody to comply with the requirements of his sentence and be on good behaviour to avoid the potential of greater consequence.
