Ahead of the October local government elections, Ravensthorpe Shire residents are invited to informal sessions next week for people thinking of nominating for Council.
“Now is the perfect time to start thinking about if you would like to give back to your community and stand for Council,” a spokesperson said.
“To be eligible to nominate as a candidate for a local government election you must be registered on the WA Electoral Commission electoral roll as an elector of the district (residential or owner/occupier) and over 18 years of age.
“Anyone who is considering standing for Council is encouraged to come along to the sessions in Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun.”

Shire of Ravensthorpe chief executive Matthew Bird said he would be at each session to talk prospective candidates through the process and answer any questions about how Council operated.
Sessions are scheduled for Ravensthorpe Council Chamber on Wednesday August 6 and Hopetoun Community Centre on Thursday August 7, both sessions at 5pm.
The WA Local Government Association (WALGA) is running an election candidate information briefing webinar on Monday August 18 at 6pm.
Esperance Shire will host a viewing of the webinar in Council Chambers, and welcomes everyone interested in nominating for Council, a spokesperson said.

“The webinar will feature expert presenters covering a range of topics around the election process, roles and responsibilities of local government, elected members and the council, and the role of the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety (LGIRS) as the regulator of local government in WA,” she said.
“The aim is to prepare successful candidates for life as an Elected Member, however this information will also provide valuable insights for anyone interested in local government processes.”
Nominations for local government candidates open on August 28 and close at 4pm on September 4.
Election day is October 18.
