Time to be snake aware

As the weather warms and snakes start actively hunting and seeking a mate, people are urged to keep an eye out for them.

Snakes are present in all Australian landscapes including desert, farmland and bush, and often make an appearance in the suburbs as well.

Australia has about 170 species of land and sea snakes, with about 100 considered venomous of which about a dozen are considered dangerous to humans.

Snake catcher Darren Darch has removed up to 400 snakes per annum from homes and business premises and has these simple tips for the warmer months.

Don’t provide shelter

“Mow the lawn regularly and remove anything the snake can live under,” he said.

“That means as many items as you can from around the home which could be used for the snakes to take up residence.

“The snake needs pressure against his body to feel comfortable so things higher off the ground are less likely to be used as shelter.”

Limit things like water bowls and control rodents

“Snakes need to drink and eat and we have got to limit food sources like lizards, frogs and mice,” he said.

Mr Darch removes snakes in and around Esperance and can be contacted by phoning 9071 2528 during office hours or 0417 745 325 after hours.
